Two words which have terrified our little family - Pulmonary Embolism. Mike went to the doctor to have his cast removed last Thursday and told the doctor about having a calf pain. We thought it was just a strained muscle in his calf as he's been walking a bit crooked in the cast. The doctor agreed that was probably all it was - then Mike mentioned it again after the cast was off. Thankfully the doctor then ordered a sonogram. The results came back - Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT). The doctor ordered Mike to the closest Emergency Room.
Mike went to Swedish Hospital and I drove down from home. The ER doctor went over various symptoms and when Mike mentioned that he had been short of breath the night before - the ER doctor ordered a CAT scan of his lungs. The CAT scan revealed two clots in his lungs - pulmonary embolism (PE). We were petrified. The ER doctor admitted Mike to the hospital and they immediately started him on two blood thinners.
Mike stayed in the hospital for two days and then the doctor said that since his blood/oxygen level was good and he was breathing ok - that he could come home. We are still so scared as the blood thinners do not break up the clots - we have to wait for Mike's body to do that naturally. The blood thinners just ensure that no more clots form.
Mike has to go to the doctor every day to have his blood checked to make sure the second thinner is at the correct dosage. The really scary thing is that today Mike appears to be coming down with a cold....this on top of the DVT and PE.
Nicholas does not understand any of this - we just told him that Dad was having a sleep-over at the doctor's house. But I've instructed Nicholas to watch Mike like a hawk and let me know if he sees anything while I'm occupied (in the bathroom or whatever).
Please say a prayer for Mike. PE is very dangerous and we would really appreciate all the prayers and love you could send his way.
Love to all...

Hi to all:
I have thought of you all constantly since our phone conversation yesterday. Mike we are praying for you and all your family as well. I am sure the Dr. will be on top of all of this and I am sure you were all very concerned and still are.
It was good to hear Nicholas is doing good in school and he must have been concerned when his Dad was not home for two days. Will be in touch and keep us posted as you can and have the time.
Our love and prayers. I did not mention any of this to Gammy and won't. She would be worried to death.

We'll be praying for Mike and for all of you as you deal with this.

Keep us posted on prayer requests.
I am SO glad Mike mentioned it to the doctor and that the doc was on top of things. How scary. We'll be praying.
